Two-cell simulations in phase space for the lateral inhibition regime with k1 = 0.0 in the absence or presence of diffusion, as showed in Fig. 3B. The trajectories of the two cells with initial values (u, v) = (±0.1, 0.0) are shown in teal colored lines, the gray point shows the central unstable steady state. Without diffusion (graph on the left) the two cells oscillate by following a limit cycle around the central steady state. In the presence of diffusion (graph on the right) the two cells stop at opposite phase where the changes promoted by reaction (black arrows) are balanced by the changes promoted by diffusion (green arrows). This behavior generates chessboard patterns as shown in Fig. 2E.
