Movie 11.

Simulation of Hydra tissue regeneration resulting in an asymmetric defect configuration with a +1 defect and a pair of +1/2 defects. Simulation results showing a regenerating tissue spheroid initiated with a partially ordered fiber configuration and no morphogen (Fig. 7C; see supplementary Materials and Methods for details). The tissue deformations and the dynamics of the nematic and morphogen concentration fields are modeled through 30 recurring global fiber contraction events (the cycle is indicated). The spheroid is shown from a top view centered on one of the actin foci and a side view. The tissue self-organizes into a configuration with an aster-shaped +1 defect colocalized with a morphogen peak at one end of the spheroid (emulating the organizer emerging at the future head site), and a pair of +1/2 defects at the opposite side.
