Induction of paired bends by mechanical deformation resulted a response of cyclical beating (BEAT). Response of a demembranated sperm at 1.5 μM ATP following to paired bend formation by lateral needle movement. Sequential images of this movie are shown in Fig. 1D (Beating, BEAT1). Numbers at the bottom right indicate time in seconds. Induction of bending was completed in 2 seconds (18:01:47-18:01:49) and the induced bends started to oscillate for three cycles (18:01:49-18:01:58, 18:01:58-18:02:05, and 18:02:05-18:02:12) before stoppage.
