In the first experiment, we modified the principal stimulus. The first clip shows that spiders are less likely to look away from a cricket image. The boomerang-shaped principal eye retinas are exploring a silhouette of a cricket, and are not distracted by the appearance of an oval visible to the ALEs. The next clip illustrates that spiders are more likely to look away from an oval. The principal eyes are exploring an oval, and are quickly directed to an oval that suddenly appears in the field of view of the ALEs. The cursor is visible to the experimenter placing the distractor, but is not visible to the spiders.
