Withdrawal behavior by Manduca sexta in response to noxious stimuli. The caterpillar bends its anterior body segments away from the direction of stimulus (IR-laser beam targeted on the right side of its body). Black paint spots on the caterpillar allow for absorption of the laser beam to create a localized heat pulse. The recorded behavior is being replayed at ∼0.25x speed.
