The left and center images also display the glomerular capillary system (GCS, red), showing the relationship between mesangium and GCS. (Left) The extraglomerular mesangium (EGM) appears between the afferent arteriole (AA) and efferent arteriole (EA). (Center) The lower half of the GCS is removed; the IGM filling the interspace between glomerular capillaries is visible. (Right) The IGM spreads from the EGM like the roots of a tree. The EGM and IGM are connected by a tiny region, which is the mesangial stalk.
