Movie 1.

Biting attempt response (BAR) of the female Aedes aegypti mosquito. When potential food is perceived in close proximity (i.e. an artificial feeder filled with water and heated to 35°C), the mosquito repeatedly attempts to reach the heat source with its proboscis. In this case, the water is only being used for demonstration purposes; in the experiments, heparinised sheep blood was offered. The arrival of the two air currents can be observed on either side of the vertical tube enclosing the mosquito. At the time mark of 0:08 s, the insect passes one of its legs, in addition to the proboscis. In most cases, the distinction was clear, but if there was any doubt as to whether it was the proboscis or a leg, parsimony was favoured and it was considered a noresponse.
